1 Step Guide to Get More twitter Followers

twitterIt’s crazy how easy it is to forget about the word “social” in social networks. You might not really care about twitter or your number of followers and it’s totally fine with me, but for a lot of people it’s actually pretty important. We could spend a lot of time discussing about what is really important on twitter (the number of followers or the strength of your network), but no matter what your strategy or vision is, finding followers is important. You can probably find a thousand posts online on “how to get more followers on twitter”, but to be honest I feel that unless you are already “popular”, here’s the one step process that work best:

followThat’s right, the “follow” button. This button is your best friend on twitter and is one of the best way to attract more followers. If you want to get involved in your community and want to network with like-minded people, use search.twitter.com, find people who tweet in a similar niche and press the follow button. If you have a decent profile showing some activity, there is no reason not to be followed back. In fact, you can expect that 90% of people will follow you back. So, what’s in a good twitter profile worth following?

  • An avatar
  • A background image
  • A website link that is NOT a sales page
  • A decent bio
  • Activity
  • Tweets about something else than your own blog/website

twitter is a social network and just like anything social, you will have to interact with people. Just like when you attend social events in real life, you can’t stay in a corner and expect people to come and talk to you. Honestly, there are blogs dedicated to twitter that write posts everyday on how to get more followers, but it’s quite simple: care, interact, have fun and press that “follow” button!

whats is pretty weird for me, is the fact that i have some French language blog and English blog as well , so it,s becoming kinda difficult to get strength network in my particular case, do you have any trick to maximize twitter utility for me?
actually i have english intentional follower and local french quebecer who are following me..

    • Ben Tremblay says:

I completely understand what you are going through because I will have to go through this very soon as well…

I honestly think it's kinda hard to use twitter as a "promotional tool" when you run multiple websites and it's even harder if they are multi-lingual. What I would advise is to keep a personal twitter account with your name and you can tweet in english or french but you are not actively promoting your websites through this account. Then, you can run separate twitter accounts for each websites or group of websites.

I do something similar, I have a twitter account @BenTremblay and I have another one called @BloggingTips where I just post blogging tips…

Let me know what you think!

  2. Nice post. It seems that in any social network, in order to get people to be your friend, you must go out and make friends first. I used the same strategy with Digg. I went out and added a bunch of friends, and now almost 50% have become mutual friends. Now, I can shout out my best stories and they have a chance at being instantly dugg by over 100 people. Keep up the good work.

    • Ben Tremblay says:

Great example with Digg! I never really got involved in Digg, but I see the strategy, it doesn't look any different than twitter. The only difference with twitter is that people ReTweet your posts instead of Digging them ;)

      Thanks for your comment!

I twitter for fun, diving into conversations or anything intriguing out there. And I'm not shy about it because as you said it's a social thing. Besides, they followed me – it's the price they have to pay. :) And I love to tweet about interesting posts I find. And retweet a fellow user's tweets. Especially the funny ones.

    • Ben Tremblay says:

Exactly, getting involed and having fun is the way to go on twitter. No matter what you like to talk about, as long as you are 100% transparent and authentic, you'll win.

  4. Stanley Tang says:

Well said. Exactly what I talked about in my blog post :)

  5. Gennaro says:

That actually makes a lot of sense. Find people in a similar niche and follow. They'll likely do the same.

Just launched my Twitter last week so this helps.

    I'm @EWanderlust

  6. nick says:

that is true and by following you also get to be intouch with the movers and shakers in your niche .

following definately helped us connect with a good number of peers.

  7. I can't keep up with the few I'm following now. Once I get a system going I'll probably look for more Twitter friends. I prefer following those I blog and comment with.

    • Ben Tremblay says:

Yeah, at some point you can't read every single tweet. I'm at a point I read the tweets when I'm online and also read my replies so I can reply back. But you're right, it can easily get out of control ;)

  8. Fabulous and simple advice. My favorite kind. Now off I go to Stumble you :~)

  9. Ben Tremblay says:

Absolutely, it is a very effective way to build relationships and connect with like-minded people!

  10. automobile says:

Heyy.. Nice blog. First time I visit here and have great time to read all the post. Thanks for the sharing your knowledge.

  11. I can really see the benefit in doing this with Digg. Never tried it, but think I might give it a go. I would imagine it is the same way with stumble upon, huh?

  12. Gini says:

You're so right. I follow everyone who follows me, and I really pay attention to their posts. I reply to them occasionally, too. If I do it, hopefully others do the exact same thing.

    • Ben Tremblay says:

Yes exactly, replying to people will help you a lot that's for sure! Following back is key also, even some of the big guys start to realize they won't be able to expand their network unless they follow back at some point.

  13. exwantoro says:

I am the newbie, and i interested with usefull of twitter, O.K. sir i will try this, to follow yours, thanks

  14. Reg says:

Just set up a twitter account not 100% sure how to use it yet but im sure will get into the swing of things soon.

  15. johntimber says:

Following is the best way to get things rolling… It also serves the underlying function of Twitter, which is social networking. I've found that followers tend to come in waves after you reach certain benchmarks. It's been an interesting ride so far. Good advice.

    • Ben Tremblay says:

You are absolutely right about followers coming in waves. I can sometime get 3 new followers in a day and then the next day I get 100 just because I posted a nice tweet or something. Thanks for visiting my friend!

    What's up Log Leaper?

I love the post, but a larger illustration of the follow might have been better. ;)

I treat people who message me on Twitter the same as I would on my blog comments as well – by responding to them. I'm not a TwitterManiac though, so it's not hard for me to do. I can see how that could be overwhelming for peeps with 20,000 followers. lol.

I'm testing out a couple new twitter apps actually. I use twhirl but I don't really like it.I need better organization, and then I'd probably "tweet" more.

    Cheers!
    Jay

    • Ben Tremblay says:

      Hey, big head!

Thanks for your comment buddy, which reminds me I haven't been on your blog recently….

I know you are doing things right on twitter, you started following a lot of people recently and it did pay off in term of the number of followers.

Responding to friends on twitter as you point out is also a key element I think, otherwise people won't even bother retweeting your posts and stuff like that…Which matters on twitter.

I hate twhirl man, I use tweetdeck. I don't LOVE tweetdeck, but it's not too bad. Only feature lacking in tweetdeck at the moment is muli-accounts support. You tried it?

      Ben.

  17. There comes a point that popularity on a third-party site doesn't mean popularity for your own site. With a weblog I'm helping deploy, the client wants there to be no local comments – only tweets.

  18. Splendid Kid says:

I actually don't need thousands of followers. If 50% of it are inactive and just a spammer, it makes no sense of having thousands of followers :)

  19. Tal says:

Why do you need thousands of followers :? personally I prefer my close friends

  20. Ajit says:

It's a better way to build relationships and connect with people!

  22. Great post. I think the key to getting more followers is by following more people and actually interactive with other users. Join in!

  23. i like your blog. Now i go to follow your twitter . . :)

  24. Well that is pretty dang simple!

  25. nano says:

Thanks for the post. Hope to see more articles regarding this one. It will really be a big help.
    Thank you

  26. To be honest, I have not tried twitter yet. However, it sounds like a huge community whereby you are able to find like-minded people and click together. We should start following instead of waiting for people to follow. Thanks for sharing with us!

  27. I agree with you. Twitter gives me a lot of traffic in this way. I search twitts similar to my niche and them follow the authors of those twitts. I have more than 35% of possibilities to be followed.

  28. This actualy makes a lot of sense. Unless you're already known people will have no way of knowing about you even if your twits are extremely interesing. By following others you're ensuring that they'll check out your profile.

  29. I like Twitter. Thanks for your one step guide. It is useful. Thanks for sharing! I would definitely check it out.

  30. Thanks for the tips. It's hard for someone to follow you but If you have the right strategy then they eventually will follow.

  31. CSS Perk says:

Great tips once again. I can't deny my growing fascination with Twitter and I also can't deny that you have some of the best Twitter related articles out there. I totally agree with your method of getting more followers. It's really very simple. You just have to act like you're not on Twitter for the sole purpose of promoting your site. ACT LIKE A REAL PERSON. Haha. I think people can tell if you're just out there to promote and nothing else. Acting like a normal person and posting about things other than your site, interacting with and following people, etc. That's the best way to go.

  32. Diet Blog says:

I agree, that's a great was to get more followers. People on Twitter just want to interact; that's what its all about.

  33. Discon says:

Twitter work for those who already have a backup of readers

  34. Hey great info. Its quite useful and informative for twitter lovers. Thanks

  36. Roxanne says:

I have been wondering when I was a first timer o twitter, How can I have followers? It was just these past few weeks that i have discovered hat you need to follow to have many followers.

  37. Your advice is actually good advice on how to succeed in most of the social media. Be real, care, interact. That's pretty much it. You boiled it down very nicely.
