awesomebackgrounds.com – Web 0.1 Friday
June 12th, 2009
Some companies and websites really put a lot of efforts in design to make sure their website provide the best user experience possible. While we should talk about these great companies embracing the Web 2.0 philosophy, there are a lot of websites making huge efforts so that their website remain outdated. It’s Friday, so let’s have some fun and talk about one of these websites.
My Web 0.1 award this week goes to awesomebackgrounds.com that I discovered while searching for some backgrounds. It is a great example of what not to do if you want people to buy your products and before you think it’s an old website last updated in 1999, let me tell you that the page was last updated March 4th 2009.

They sell awesome PowerPoint designs, perfect for professional presentations (?):

And yes, there are some classic Web 0.1 animated gifs:

Visit the site and share your hidden gems.
I plan to do more of these, so feel free to send me your favorite Web 0.1 examples by email ( benoit at bentremblay.com ) or directly here in the comment section.

Just about any high school's homepage is a classic example of a web 0.1 site.
Simple and very classic. I still go for web 0.1, I am not at ease doing web 2.0 because of its limitation.
Man, it hurts my heart when I see someone using this stuff. Half the students in the web design class I just finished were still using this junk and they spent hours developing their site.
Web 2.0 has no limitation except for the limitations of the person developing it.
This is good example of web 0.1. Simple and useful.
… useful?
Hey Ben,
Just catching up and doing my rounds of the bloggerhood. Not seen much of you recently. Hope all is good.
I have to say I am loving the "Web 0.1 Friday" – great reading. I might have a few to dig out for you
That is some old school stuff, there. Basic as hell.
Most of the people in my web design class aren't talented enough to make these designs. I wish that were a joke.
this is the future!
Oh my god, I recently re-discovered my very first website.. and the animated gifs are nothing but hilarious.. I guess all websietes were like that back then, though.. oh my god!
like a timewarp! i remember sites looking like these long ago
Hello,
a very nice article. Thanks for the helpful information.
Web 0.1 is funny
Hey, I can get 15 pro gifs for only 99$ ?:D Damn, that's a steal!
I wonder how much money this guy is making off idiots or internet newbies ? Seriously, some people have no shame …
I like web 0.1 myself
funny post…I look forward to seeing more of them in the future. Check out Angelfire/Geocities!
Man, first visit to this site and great post to boost my confidence. Only been web building for pleasure for 6 months, but even my first attempt didn't look like that. As for my Keynote presentations, well!!! Needless to say I won't be beating myself up anymore over my design skills. Thanks for that gem of artistic talent.
all school sites are like this, boring and old!.. would love to jazz them up!
That’s one of the common things
that the we owners take seriously.
The designing area.
But you know the we design is just the physical
feature, the contents has greater impact.
Contents+Design+Update is a good combination.
Looks so oldie.. How can we use it?
Maybe the page loads faster. That sometimes is an important factor in keeping trafick. Althoug I must say it does look like a website circa 1999.

Yeah that site looks pretty old school. For a lot of niches, this approach actually does quite well. Not everyone is looking for fancy flash animations and interactive page elements. Some people just want the straight goods without the bells and whistles.
That powerpoint template arrow should really be going the other way with the current economy
Pretty awesome templates on this website. As a student, I could totally see myself using some of the backgrounds they have!
Till then,
Jean
Good background templates. It's really good powerpoint presentation templates. Thanks.
