Buying e-books

July 18th, 2008

There are thousands of e-books about making money online and they all promise the same thing: make you rich. You can easily pay between 10$ and 100$ for an e-book, but the real question is: is it worth it?

Worth it?

I think it’s not worth investing in e-books for a couple of simple reasons. At least, it’s not worth investing in a lot of ebooks. The main reason is that making money online is not something you can learn in books: it’s a lot of hit and miss. You can surely learn techniques to maximize your chances of success and learning in e-books is one of the possibility. Basically, the most important thing is to know the basic traffic & SEO techniques and there are a lot of places where you can learn these techniques. The way to learn them is your choice, wether it’s e-book, blogs or forums. There are so many good resources out there that I tend to think e-books aren’t really worth it.

Where to buy

If you really want to buy one I’d say the best way to do it is the Digital Point forum. If you don’t know Digital Point, it’s a webmaster forum and there’s a market place on it. In the market place, there are a lot of people selling ebooks but wait for others to review them. Once you see good reviews, then I guess it’s ok to buy the e-book. Don’t buy too many, it’s a common mistake to buy a lot and then realize it was worthless.

You can’t learn everything in books

Remember that making money online is not something you can learn in books: you can only learn basic techniques. The internet is a lot of hit and miss and you might end up starting 10 different projects before finding one that’s working. Knowing the basic and advanced techniques might lower that to 2-3 projects, but it’s still hit and miss. Once you have a good project, it’s the same story: you have to figure out ways to monetize it and it’s a whole different story every time.

Don’t spend too much into stuff like e-books. Instead, why not take that 10-20$ and pay someone for 500 directory submissions? That would be a 10-20$ well invested and a concrete way to increase your traffic and future profits. You can learn most of what e-books teach you if you keep well informed by reading blogs (like this one!) and forums.

There are a couple of websites that offer free e-books if you subscribe to their newsletter or stuff like that. It’s a good way to get yourself some free e-books for nothing. Get them and read them. Read wathever free stuff you can get about making money online, but don’t spend too much money, it’s not always worth it.

  1. People shouldn’t stop buying e-books, they should stop buying crappy “re-worded” e-books.

There are more than millions of e-books on the niche of making money online, and how to do it, and they sell for 10-15 dollars, but these books are essentially crap books. And people need to realize that. There’s a difference between an amazing book, and a book that just re-words other books.

It’s the books that are absolutely unique, and create an entirely new niche, or redefine the entire market are the e-books worth buying. Not the books that stay within an over-populated niche, and say that they’re the masters of that niche. Those books suck.

Yep, I agree with you. It’s hard to find good e-books these days, especially in popular niches like making money online.

  3. Chris SEO says:

if you have the right laptop then reading ebooks can be just as easy as reading real books. If you are using a desktop PC it just isn’t as relaxing.

  4. Jennifer says:

I think that same e-books are worth buying.
There are also some great free ones out there too!

  5. Ben says:

Yes there are some e-books worth buying, but they are kind of hard to find as there are so many crappy ones. I read some free ones you get with subscriptions to newsletters and stuff like that and to be honest some are pretty good!

I agree that there are a lot of rubbish eBooks on the market but that doesn’t mean you should discount all of them i have read some real crackers & i prefer to download & read them at my own leisure, another great place to find reviews & loads of freebie is the warrior forum, get involved & swap reviews.
It’s quite amazing how many free resources there are on the internet, but some people just don’t look in the right places or are just too lazy. SEO is a must; you don’t get seen if you don’t monetize your blog and feeds. Has anybody noticed how Google is tuning in to the social network grid, they are snapping up everything that they can get their hands on, oh lordy lordy

Thanks for sharing this info Bill!

  8. Hi there,
I think buying 1 or 2 GOOD (!!) e-books on the topic of interest would certainly be worthwhile. The BIG problem, however, is how to find a good book. Most of the previous commenters have a similar opinion. I find it stricking to not find one single title here of a good book. I personally know two books which I have considered buying. One is from a German guy (and thus in German) called Pott. I guess he is a basically a “copycat” taking US stuff and translating it to German. But at least he seems to understand what he is copying.

The other book I have just learned about is “blogging to the bank 2″ from Rob Benwell. However, after some Googling about him I am not so sure anymore. It seems like most reviews about him are written by himself under different user IDs. Must cost him a load of time though.

So the 1 million dollar question is … what is a good book on making money on the internet!?

    Lets hear it!

  9. Ben says:

Yes, I have to agree with you, it’s extremely hard to find good e-books. Unfortunately, as I’m not a great e-book lover(probably for that same reason), I don’t have any to recommend.

    I agree too… it’s really hard find e-book!

  11. Some of my favorite e-books that I’ve read online Bill are Seth Godin’s Unleashing The Ideavirus, Jonathan Leger’s Search Engine Myths Exposed, Sebastian Saldarriaga’s Dynamite Internet Marketing Tricks, and Yaro Starak’s Blog Profits Blueprint.

Each varied from 0-25 dollars, but they’re well worth it. Especially Seth Godin’s Unleashing The Ideavirus. It’s the #1 most downloaded e-book of all time.

  12. Ben says:

Thanks for your suggestion Matthew, I’m sure this will help a couple of persons here.

  13. I completely agree with you Ben, I have several successful Websites and Online Money Streams and I have NEVER paid a dime for the learning tools, there are plenty of great free e-books and how-to blogs for learning techniques, that spending money on these books is a waste.
    Thanks Ben, good post!
