Google shows more information on LinkedIn profiles

May 19th, 2009

I noticed something today that I think is fairly new on Google Search. There are now more useful informations on the LinkedIn profiles you will find in the search results. Searching for my name for example now brings the following LinkedIn profile on Google:

linkedin

As you see, there is an additional line that shows my geographic location and my official LinkedIn profile title. I really like it as it makes results more useful and I see it as a good initiative. Nobody likes to click on 3 or 4 different profiles to find the right one and with this new addition to the search results it solves the problem.

I am sure we’ll see more and more of these for trusted domains in the future and it is definitely a good thing. Well, as long as it improves our search experience of course.

It's not about LinkedIn only, they had recently announced support for micro-formats. Basically Google is saying (really carefully) that in the future you will be able to control (to some degree) such special information displayed in search results.

And big sites get cookies first obviously. :)

I really like all this honestly, but I was thinking about the impact this could have on theses websites' visitors. Basically, you can get part of the information you're looking for on Google without having to visit LinkedIn to find out if it's the right profile. In most case it would be "untargetted" trafic that they would lose so we could say it doesn't matter, but a visitor is still a visitor…

  2. Google search engine is just trying to help their visitors to get the perfect results and from there they can move to any place where they wanted to.

Have you tried this with other results or this one is only applicable on linkedin.
