Technology, business and change
Social media and blogging takes time, but that’s fine
Yes, social media takes time. Being on twitter or Facebook and blogging can be quite time consuming and it’s one of the most common complaint from businesses and individuals. I can’t deny the fact that social media is extremely time consuming, but to be honest, that’s totally fine: it’s called natural selection.
Time is the best way to separate the serious people from the non-serious people and not just in social media, in real life too. Just ask an Olympic athlete how many hours he had to train to get to the Olympics, what sacrifices he had to make. Well, not everybody is ready to make those sacrifices and invest the necessary time and that’s totally fine: if it was easy to get to the Olympic, it would be one hell of a boring event. The event is great because only the best athletes compete and if they are great, it’s not only because they are talented people: they didn’t fear to put time and efforts.
Social media is no different. Of course it’s important to have a good strategy to make the most out of your time, but it takes time. Gaming the system just won’t work…long term.

Reminds me of something I read, "The athlete doesn't enjoy training, he enjoys the benefits of having trained."
Anything worth doing is going to take some time, and using social media outlets is no different. While the results may not show up immediately, over time they will.
Hope you're doing well, Ben!
Hey, glad to see you here Mark, it's been a long time! I'm doing great, thanks.
Thank you for dropping a comment and it reminds me I haven't visited your blog in a while. I've been bad at reading blogs lately unfortunately. I will go visit though
Ben.
This post reminds me of all of the "dead" blogs that are floating around cyperspace – I have a few out there myself from the past several years. People get excited, to jump on the latest trend and it dies out after the initial thrill is gone. I guess the difference is, we are here for the long haul – though thick and thin. I'm determined not to let another one of my blogs die out again.
Yep, it's easy to drop a blog and dropped blogs are usually on a subject that isn't your passion. I've also decided to drop some other projects to concentrate on blogs/projects I love. It's easy to run 10 average projects, running 2 great projects is harder but the benefits are greater…
Thanks for dropping a line!
I'm an artist first and a Blogger second. I see creating and maintaining a blog as another medium and like any creative medium, if you don't enjoy the process you aren't meant to do it. How long it takes is irrelevant to the artist. If blogging is your creative medium you will keep on keeping on.
I see where you are going Adele. I should've considered this point in my post, or at least the point that not everybody will blog for the same reasons. What I wanted to point out wasn't that a blog can't be low priority, but more that people/businesses who want to build a solid brand online and aren't making blogging/social media one of their top priority might be missing something.
Twitter especialy takes a lot of time. Personaly I spend around 3-4 hours a day twittering and I think it's way too much! I'd like to quit but I just can't…
wow, 3-4 hours a day is a lot. Cut that to 2-3 hours and write one more blog post per day!
Depends on as if its your professionalism that drives you till the end or some mere excitement of following what others are doing. The latter one dies eventually, but the urge to succeed as professional wont make you stand behind. Doing SEO thing and maintaining the blogs has become the prime job in any web related firm. For those, they have to do it! While on the other hands, we have the vagabond type of people doing travel around the globe and they share the experiences on their somewhat PERSONAL blogs and keeping the things running on Social media as well to keep their friends updated or just rejoicing the facts to be shared.
It has only two possibilities for me now. Whether its your personal thing or its your professional one.
You are right. Like I mentioned to Adele, I should've considered this point in my post: not everybody is blogging for the same reasons. In fact, I don't have problems with a personal blog being updated once every two months as it's not a top priority. My point was more that if one of your objectives is to build a solid professional brand online, then blogging and social media have to be top priorities and it does take time unfortunately.
Thanks for dropping a comment!
While I agree that those that dedicate the most time are often the ones who come out on top, I don't agree with the idea that one has to spend their time on social media to build a successful brand online. That is just one path that many people choose. I personally avoid sites like twitter and facebook simply because they waste too much time. This way I can focus more on other important things such as seo and improving conversion rates. You just have to find good strategies that work well for you and stayed dedicated with them.
It depends a lot on your business model and how well your business is developed. If you run an e-commerce site and you are already getting traffic & sales and have a good reputation, improving your SEO and conversion rate might be the best strategy for you. Although I'm sure social media would help.
I always say that social media is not the solution to all problems even though I think it is the solution to a lot of problems.
Thanks for the comment.
Its all about patience, How you handle blogs and social networking websites. It take alots time but surely you will get positive results indeed.
I blog a lot! I love it. It can be a lot of work but it's great.
Of course this really isn't typical blogging, its all video blogging ( http://www.anime-eater.com )…
Can't complain. SEO is interesting – still figuring out the tricks.
Yes, He is right. Social Media is some how time consuming. But surely when you implement it in right way then the result will be in your favour in the end. Social media is really good marketing technique. Most SEO consider this technique in their algorithms. Benoit Tremblay you points are quite mature and motivated. Thanks
Hey , you posted very nice and informative text.
I have a job interview this week at an ad agency and one thing they asked was that I demonstrate my knowledge of social media and online media. I have a lot of experience online through twitter, facebook, blogging, etc.
Agreed. It takes time to maintain a social media and blogging. Patience is also needed in order to build solid online business.
Its true. I believe this feature of social media acts as a barrier between spammers and non spammers. As non spammers can wait but spammers don't wait. So its good.
Yes, between managing a number of different websites and spending a lot of time on twitter, facebook, etc one can lose a lot of time. It's really the return on that time investment that matters, but a person won't know if it works or not until after he or she has tried it for a while. Regardless, social media knowledge is in great demand right now and even if it doesn't seem like it's worth it from a personal perspective, it may well help in getting an interview or even getting hired.
Nice discussion going on. I too agreed by this. nice info you have mention here. Thanks
i really like your site its very nice information.
I have experienced that. It is really time consuming. Needs our effort on that job.
