Why your brand’s Facebook page might suck

July 28th, 2009

I think Facebook did a great job with “pages” and what you can do with them is really interesting, particularly for brands. The sad thing is that most Facebook brands’ pages suck. Really.

They suck because they fail to understand the core concept of social media and that providing value is not an option. I’m just going to throw random stats here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if 95% of Facebook pages were just a boring copy of the brand’s/person’s RSS feed. Then, social interactions are mainly sales pitch or self-promotion.

facebook

I’m sorry, but I need more. I need more than an additional feed of your content: for that there’s RSS and email. I need social interactions and content that is not necessarily about your brand, but that still can be of interest to me.

So, if your Facebook page looks like a RSS feed and that your logo is all over the place, it might be time to re-think your strategy.

Too true – I would have to agree with you on this one – it really does not offer a great deal of "value" that is for sure.

  2. Yes, Some how you are right. Many facebook pages owner only focusing on their brands to market it. They just doing marketing strategies and put RSS feeds to keep update users. I have personally seen it.They dont even interact with them. Nice Observation Ben. Good work

  3. The worst thing that a brands creator can do is to make it unclear, and these ones are so muddy that I can barely say what is "inside" of one's account. This is a common mistake for many web developers. I must say that I always found US sites a little bit unclear. The macros that are included to home site often look like put accidentally, main titles are not referring to what you can find inside. When I go to US site I almost every time feel uncertain (will I find anything in this jungle?). The mistake is also to put a lot information on one site instead of giving people just the main topics and leave some links that conduct to more information. That is my opinion.

  4. yes, can't see the value!

  5. Hopefully this might help up the amount of sales that we can do now!

  6. me neither!.. not much value to be had really.

  7. Hi, good quality, relevant inbound links will help customers and search engines find your business website.

search the google then find your site.
that is a really excellent post.

    Thanks for the post.

  9. excellent post!.. but yes, not too much value i guess.

  10. Chris says:

Agreed… I think the big problem is so many companies want to get involved with social media but have very little understanding of what it actually is and how it works. Then you have marketing, pr and web design firms all saying they do social media when all they do is create a page for you then collect a check. If you want to do well with social media you can hire someone to set it up but at the end of the day someone who knows your company has to participate.

  11. That was indeed a nice comment of yours. As of now, those pages can be modified that will suit your personality, and of course, why are you really at the facebook on the first place.

  12. Facebook sucks, but there ppc is ok.

  13. used tires says:

Automated anything when it comes to social networking never works, it's sad to see the missed opportunities when big name companies do it. They are saving some money by automating things, but losing out big time on the long run.

    Till then,

    Jean

  14. facebook does suck!.. but agree the ppc is good

  15. faris says:

Yess..I really agree that..Do you believe that the inside people of facebook is CIA people..they collect all the data information of people and they can easily find out the information of you

  16. imreviews says:

    Facebook become worst!!!!

  17. As i read in your previous post about twitter same thing going to happen with FaceBook if facebook not prevented such types of spammers and users than facebook surely become worst to use, why people not understanding use of social media, i don't think its proper way to branding for any site or products need to band such websites or users.

  18. Jacob says:

So you believe that facebook is nothing but a palace to copy the things and facebook is going to pay for me..

  19. Shawn Tuttle says:

Facebook is the worst by far. Thanks for the post.

  20. SEO Sydney says:

Facebook is definitely full of people either using it for the wrong reasons an trying to spam unwary guests and users. Great post – very informative..

    Hi

I've not really used facebook to promote my blog but I was wondering about the do follow links attribute of this blog and seeing as it is SEO related, maybe you can help me?

I have an e-blogger blog about Tom Dwan and was wondering how I too could change my links to do follow?

I too would like to give something back.

    Thanks

  23. John says:

Facebook’s restrictions could create a situation where the primary desired name gets snatched up in the free-for-all come Saturday. But, Facebook has already addressed this to an extent. If you’re worried about your trademark or intellectual property infringement, you can almost rest-assured that you’re protected

  24. facebook is full of unwanted spam1

  25. That's a great point, many of my clients think they're doing "social media" just because they can throw up a Facebook page and put in a RSS feed. Many of the best Facebook pages are truly a destination in and of themselves, and people need to keep this in mind when deciding to build out social media profiles.

  26. Mington says:

completely pointless, the last company i worked for made one to try and drum up some business, but all it got was 10 followers and all of them worked there

  27. Martin says:

It's not surprising that everything that is just copied from some brand is boring. And those things happen not only in Facebook but in every in-web and out-web thing, same cars, same advertisements, same clothes, blah. I don't like ordinary things, maybe someday original and unique items will be available to purchase (mass production of unique things – I know, it's utopia).

  28. A Fan Page is your company’s presence on Facebook. It’s the commercial version of a personal profile page that establishes your company, celebrity image, product, or organization as a social entity, capable of reaching and engaging customers, both on Facebook and off. Personal social connectivity provides outreach, and endless possibilities for convenient content publishing and social interaction make effective and lasting engagement possible.

  29. I think facebook should have a profile background too.

  30. Great info, Thanks for sharing

  31. Dinnerware says:

I agree with you Mr. Tremblay. The companies have to participate on some type of conversation. They have to give the information about they deal with and what are the things they have already done and how did they do it. It has to be interactive.

  32. definitely true! I've been like that before, spamming my friends by promoting my blog. So can you throw some ideas on how we can facebook pages correctly?

  33. cupider says:

I was fan of facebook earlier but with there new theme it is very complicated,People want to have sites which is friendly to them like orkut.. Face book has now become a crap book..I think they should bring the old face book again instead of this new one.

  34. harry says:

I think is that most facebook page suck really .definitely true ! i have been like that before ,spamming my brother and promoting my blog .thank you

  35. Emo says:

I just started to create my facebook account, I see some great features. I haven't seen any problem yet maybe I just have to browse around and see some useful things that I can use.

  36. Stechmücken says:

Very interesting post. Thanks a lot.

  37. Roxanne says:

This is so true. I agree with you. Other ads on facebook sucks. We should think it through before we put some ads or conversations on our facebook page. Thanks for sharing.

  38. It is obvious that always the most of "default" sites suck. Not because they are so bad, but because everyone is using them! How could I make my blog visible if it would just like like any other blog in the web? Writing about something unique is not the only thing that matters, also the package is very important. The way you show your thoughts is as important as your thoughts.

  39. Mac Thomas says:

This is fantastic information for blog. I really love the way infomration presented in your post. I have added to you in my social bookmark…and i am w8ing ur next post

  40. Very true…so many times FB and Twitter accounts for business are only promotional. What happened to interaction? Isn't that what social media was for?

  41. It's all completely pointless, the last company i worked for made one to try and drum up some business, but all it got was 10 followers and all of them worked there

  42. Mac Thomas says:

Nothing fancy there. No offer. No tease. No call to action.

  43. nice post… worth reading

  44. I think the major problem is so many companies want to get involved with social media but have very little understanding of what it actually is and how it works. Many of the best Facebook pages are truly a destination in and of themselves, and people need to keep this in mind when deciding to build out social media profiles.

  45. Wonderful! I would like to thank you for throwing some light on about Facebook Pages. Certainly I would look to improve this.

  46. Very true indeed, most business ideas i've seen on facebook only ever get followers of the people who know about it already. That's as far as it goes!

  47. Likely most of these companies just heard hype about needing a facebook page, without any idea why. They assumed it would help get more clients or convert customers better, but they didn't take the time to figure out what it's all about. Really for it to be worthwhile, sufficient time and effort has to be applied.

  48. I agree that the big companies understand that they need to have a facebook or social networking presence, but they just don't know how to go about doing it correctly. My brother in law informed me that he was tweeting on behalf of his company, and I couldn't help but wonder what on earth he could be saying about them or who would even care because his industry is so boring………???

  49. agreed I remove my feed feature from my facebook , cause it annoy my facebook friends:)
